State Transition based on linked Work Item State

I have been working with TFS since the 2005 version and one of the issues that keeps being brought up is the rolling up of hours and state transitions when the state of linked items change. In the next version of TFS the hours roll up works hoewever not the state transitions.

I have made a recommendation on the Visual Studio User Voice site that the state transitions of linked work items be addressed in the next TFS version. If this is something you have encountered and you know how important this functionality is. Please join me in voting for this feature to be addressed in the next version.

New Perfmon Counters With TFS 11 Beta

"Can configure and interpret Perfmon counters". Not one of the top three skills you'll put or see on someone's resume however, it's a good skill to have. I am the TFS Product Manager for Accenture's CIO group in the Enterprise Workforce and haven't seen Perfmon listed on a resume to date. Since I have experience using them it would be an interesting interview discussion.

In February, Jim Szubryt and I did presentation on the next version of Team Foundation Server and Visual Studio at the Chicago ALM User Group at Microsoft’s downtown office. We will be presenting again at the Microsoft office in Downers Grove on May 23rd with some additional information with Angela Dugan of Polaris Solutions. Visual Studio 11 Beta and Windows8 Preview Released

Visual Studio 11 Beta, the Windows 8 Consumer Preview and the Rangers’s Visual Studio 11 material became available on the 29^th of February.

Jason Zanders started off with the announcement of Visual Studio 2011 beta.

Willy Schaub has posted a great quick reference to all of the Ranger material that is available on CodePlex. We appreciate your feedback on the Ranger guides as I will be continuing to work on them through the final release of Visual Studio.

Presenting at the Chicago ALM User Group February Meeting

Jim Szubryt and I will be presenting at the Chicago ALM UG meeting this month. There are a lot of cool features coming in the next version of Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server that we will be demonstrating. Jim and I are also VS ALM Rangers and we’ll be talking about the guidance in the works that will be released at the same time as the product release.

The meeting will on February 23 from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM at the Microsoft office in downtown Chicago. Their office is in the AON Center at 200 E Randolph on the 2^nd Floor. Food and beverages will be served. Please RSVP as soon as possible since security has to check you in.

“Project Dependencies” of Visual Studio 2008 Solution broken in MSBuild for TFS 2010

When migrating from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 dealt with an issue of some of the projects in the solution not building on the TFS 2010 Build Server even though the Solution builds successfully in Visual Studio.

The .sln (Solution File) can have all the all the necessary “Project Dependencies” specified in Visual Studio, but will get “CSC : error CS0006: Metadata file ProjectB.dll could not be found“. Even if your csproj files have correct references to other solution projects, msbuild will fail.

The changes needed to be made to the .SLN (Solution File) which is needed by MSBuild is in the “ProjectSection(ProjectDependencies) = postProject” section of SLN file.
